  • There are a few people who were the building blocks of Mixed Martial Arts, but as the UFC became a bona fide pay-per-view event, their first mainstream star has to be considered Chuck Liddell.

With his menacing stare and signature mohawk haircut, Liddell was an instant fan favorite from the second he stepped into the octagon. At UFC 43, Liddell fought and lost to Randy Couture for the interim UFC Light Heavyweight Title, but he would defeat Couture a year later at UFC 52 to win it.

Liddell's popularity exploded at this time and grew with four successful defenses, which included a rubber match with Couture and his second win over Tito Ortiz. After losing his title to Quenton Jackson, Liddell was unable to get a rematch, and he retired after a three-match losing streak.

As the main event (or co-main event) on pay-per-view, Liddell generated close to six million buys, a testament to his popularity.

We are proud to nominate Chuck Liddell for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
