  • There have been many great drivers from the United States, with the great ones achieving monstrous popularity within their sport. Only one of them broadened their audience to an unprecedented level.

    Blessed with driving skill and All-American appeal, Gordon won 93 wins on the NASCAR circuit, including three Daytona 500s. Gordon became so popular that sporting publications were suggesting that NASCAR could supplant the NHL as the fourth big sport in the U.S. Gordon was doing more mainstream media than his peers combined, hosted Saturday Night Live, appeared in film and television, all while retaining his likable humility and focus on the oval.

    While you might not think that Gordon is the greatest driver ever, but nobody behind the wheel moved the needle more than he did.
