  • As women’s soccer ascended to the world stage, the United States led the way. Every sport has its signature moment, and in women’s soccer, it was her celebration after scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Women’s World Cup, when she spontaneously removed her jersey and celebrated with her fists clenched in pure joy.

    Women’s soccer had arrived.

    Chastain did not just lead the U.S. to a 1999 World Cup win; she also scored 30 goals in 192 appearances and won the 1991 World Cup and two Olympic gold medals (1996 and 2004), achievements that matched her earlier success in college at Santa Clara.
