  • Over a 22-year MLB career, Joe Morgan was considered one of the most complete baseball players the game had ever seen.

    Although he started his career with the Houston Colt .45s (later known as the Astros), it was his 1971 trade to the Cincinnati Reds that truly elevated him to superstardom. As a key member of the "Big Red Machine," Morgan secured back-to-back National League MVP awards in 1975 and 1976, helping the Reds win consecutive World Series titles. Recognizable for his signature "chicken flap" elbow at the plate, he combined unusual power for a middle infielder with outstanding patience, leading the league in walks four times and on-base percentage four times at his peak.

    Beyond his offensive talent, Morgan was a top base-stealer and defender, earning five Gold Gloves from 1973 to 1977. He finished with 2,517 hits, 268 home runs, and 689 stolen bases. Even late in his career, he helped the 1980 Astros and 1983 Phillies reach the postseason.
