  • Clark Griffith had a long career in major league baseball, first as a pitcher, when he broke in with the St. Louis Browns in 1891. He had a long run in the 1890s with the Chicago Colts/Orphans before jumping to the Chicago White Stockings with the formation of the American League. Griffith was also their manager.

Griffith would continue to have a dual-tole until 1914, working for the New York Highlanders (1903-08), Cincinnati Reds (1909-11), and Washington Senators, a team he managed until 1920. The year before he stepped down as manager, he brokered a deal to become a minority owner, and after many years, he would eventually be the majority shareholder. As an owner, Griffith was frugal but shrewd, and he won a World Series in 1924. Griffith owned the team until he passed away in 1955.

We are proud to nominate Clark Griffith for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
