  • One of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, Junior Johnson, had more success as a team owner.

Junior Johnson was a highly skilled and feared NASCAR driver from the sport's early days, known for honing his high-speed skills as a legendary moonshine runner in North Carolina. He achieved 50 premier series wins, including the 1960 Daytona 500, and is credited with discovering the aerodynamic effects of drafting. Despite his success, which earned him the nickname "The Last American Hero," he retired from racing in 1966 at the peak of his career to dedicate himself to the sport's business side.

Johnson's journey as a team owner truly highlights his impressive contributions to NASCAR. With 132 wins and six Winston Cup championships, alongside legendary drivers like Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip, he became a true force to be reckoned with. His keen eye for talent and his innovative approach set the standard for excellence in the 1970s and 80s. Johnson also played a key role in attracting major corporate sponsorships, notably through his partnership with R.J. Reynolds. Recognizing his outstanding impact both behind the wheel and from the team’s helm, he was honored as part of the first-ever class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.

We are proud to nominate Junior Johnson for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
