  • If Bob Uecker had not gone into baseball, he would have had a great career as a comedian. Actually, he DID have a great career as a comedic actor, and in the loaded film Major League, it was his turn as commentator Harry Doyle that stole the show.

    Bob Uecker was a backup Catcher for six seasons, beginning with the Milwaukee Braves, and ending with a second stint with the Braves, when they were in Atlanta. Known for his self-deprecating humor about the lack of success he had as a player, Uecker joined the Braves broadcasting booth, but returned to Milwaukee to call Brewers games in 1971, and did so for the next 54 years until his death.

    While Uecker was known mostly for comedic instincts, he combined that with a cerebral understanding of the game. Uecker was so good that he worked for both ABC and, later, NBC on national telecasts, and every time he did, baseball fans knew they were going to be entertained.

    There was and will be only one “Mr. Baseball.”
