Playing one lone game at the Major League level, Walter Alston had much greater success as a manager.
Alston ascended to managing at the AAA level in the Dodgers organization by 1948, and six years later, he moved up to the parent club. From 1954 to 1978, Alston managed Los Angeles with a quiet and calm demeanor, proving he did not need to use an iron fist to get the most out of his players.
Over his tenure as a manager, “The Quiet Man” took his team to seven pennants and four World Series wins, making him one of the most successful ever in that capacity.
We are proud to nominate Walter Alston for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
