  • A Golden Spikes winner when he won the College World Series in 1980, Terry Francona had a modest career as an MLB player, but found his greatness in sports within the managerial ranks. Francona first managed in the Majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997, but was fired in 2000. After serving as a bench coach with Texas and Oakland, he got a second chance as a Manager when the Boston Red Sox hired him for the 2004 Season, and he made the most of it!

Francona inherited an excellent BoSox squad that lost in the ALCS the year before, and the hungriest fan base for a title in all of sports. Under “Tito”, Boston rallied back from 3-0 down to the New York Yankees in the ALCS, and then swept St. Louis to win the 2004 World Series and break the “Curse of the Bambino”. Boston then won the 2007 World Series, cementing Francona as a Boston legend.

Since then, Francona took over managing the Cleveland Indians and guided them to five playoff appearances, including a World Series loss to the Chicago Cubs. He did not win a World Series in Cleveland, but brought them closer to that coveted parade than anyone else since 1950.

As of this writing, Francona is currently the Manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

We are proud to nominate Terry Francona for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
