An accomplished cricketer in his day, George Wright was one of the early baseball players who was considered the game’s first great Shortstop. As good as he was as an athlete, his contributions to sports were more as a visionary, not just for baseball, but for sports in general.
While Wright was still playing baseball, he co-founded Wright & Ditson in Boston, which became a foundational figure in the sporting goods industry, introducing and popularizing equipment for tennis, hockey, and golf. American Golf is especially thankful to Wright, as he was the first to obtain a permit to create nine holes in Boston’s Franklin Park, and his pioneering work in the sport has led some to dub him the “Father of American Golf”.
While he is only recognized on a large platform by the Baseball Hall of Fame (astoundingly, as part of the second class in 1937), Wright’s overall impact on sports is not nearly as recognized as it should be.
We are proud to nominate George Wright for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
