  • If you heard a boxing call from the 1940s to the early 1980s, you would hear the no-nonsense and minimalist voice of Don Dunphy, a man who called over 2,000 fights. Dunphy called boxing on the radio for “Friday Night Fights” and later transitioned to television in a similar role for ABC.

    Among the plethora of contests he called, over 200 were for a championship, and 50 were for the Heavyweight Title, including Joe Louis vs. Billy Cohn, and the Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier trilogy. He was so synonymous with the sports that he appeared as himself in several movies, among which were Woody Allen’s “Bananas” and Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull.”

    Dunphy also called games for the New York Yankees for a brief period and for some college football.
